At Precision Microbes, we have spent the past three years investigating an important question: how can microbial technology be used to better support rumen health and cow performance on commercial farms?

That work has involved ongoing whole-herd dairy supplementation research, collaboration with farmers and veterinary practitioners, formulation development and extensive practical learning under commercial farm conditions.

It has produced encouraging observations and clear indications of potential. It has also led to the development of Rumo-STIM—a new liquid complementary feed designed to provide targeted nutritional support for rumen function, rumination and feed intake when cattle need it most.

We are delighted to officially launch Rumo-STIM in Ireland.

Where the Rumo-STIM Began

The Rumo-STIM story began with our ongoing research into whole-herd dairy supplementation.

Precision Microbes has developed a specialist live liquid fermentation platform combining quantified live bacteria with the metabolites and bioactive compounds created during fermentation.

We wanted to investigate how this technology could be applied at whole-herd level to support rumen health and cow performance.

Working across several commercial dairy farms, we monitored areas including rumination, milk yield and milk components. Longer-term fertility outcomes continue to be tracked as part of this ongoing work.

The research produced encouraging observations and clear indications of potential, particularly around rumination and rumen performance.

It also demonstrated the practical complexity of consistently incorporating a live fermented liquid product into different commercial feeding and water systems.

This remains an active and important part of our wider research programme. However, it also helped us identify a more immediate opportunity.

We could see the potential to develop a practical, targeted product for individual cattle when rumination, feed intake or normal rumen function came under pressure.

That insight became one of the main catalysts for the development of Rumo-STIM.

A Pratical Need Identified By Farmers and Vets

Throughout our development work, we were regularly asked a similar question by farmers and veterinary practitioners:

What nutritional support can we provide to an individual cow when her rumination or feed intake comes under pressure?

These are familiar situations on both dairy and beef farms.

The fresh and transition periods place significant nutritional and physiological demands on the cow. Dietary changes, changing silages, pasture transitions, movement between groups, housing, transport and other management pressures can all affect feed intake, rumination and normal digestive function.

It is always important to establish why a cow is not eating or ruminating normally.

Reduced rumination is a sign, not a diagnosis. Veterinary assessment, nutritional investigation and appropriate herd management remain essential.

However, farmers and vets also wanted access to a practical complementary feed that could provide targeted nutritional support to the rumen environment while the underlying issue was being investigated and managed.

This became a central focus of the Rumo-STIM development process.

Seeing Rumen Health More Clearly

The increasing adoption of animal-monitoring technologies has made rumen function more visible on modern farms.

Collars, ear tags, activity monitors and rumen boluses can provide continuous information about changes in rumination, feeding behaviour and activity.

Teagasc estimates that approximately 20% of Irish dairy cows are now monitored using behaviour-monitoring technologies. This represents a significant shift towards data-led herd management.

These systems are not necessarily showing us that rumen-health challenges are becoming more common. Instead, they are helping farmers and vets recognise changes that may previously have gone unnoticed until the cow displayed more obvious signs.

Monitoring technology does not replace stockmanship, clinical examination or veterinary judgement.

An alert needs to be interpreted in the context of the individual animal, including her stage of production, diet, environment, recent management changes and wider health status.

However, earlier visibility can create an opportunity for earlier investigation and more informed decision-making.

This changing picture reinforced the need for a practical nutritional support product that could be administered to an individual animal when rumination or feed intake came under pressure.

Developing the Rumo-STIM Formulation

Rumo-STIM was developed using Precision Microbes’ live liquid fermentation platform.

It combines quantified live Lactobacillus bacteria with postbiotic fermentation metabolites and fermented organic herbs. These components are included to nutritionally support the living microbial ecosystem at the centre of ruminant digestion.

During formulation development, ACTIGEN®—a scientifically researched, yeast-derived functional ingredient from Alltech—was also incorporated into the formulation.

The completed formulation is designed to support:

• Normal rumen function and fermentation
• Rumination and rumen motility
• Feed intake and digestive function
• Microbial balance within the rumen environment
• Digestive resilience during periods of nutritional or management challenge

The aim was to create a product that combines our microbial and fermentation technology with a practical liquid format suitable for targeted oral administration.

From Formulation To Practical On-Farm Use

Developing a formulation is only one part of bringing a new product to market. It must also be practical for farmers and veterinary practitioners to use with individual animals under commercial farm conditions.

Over the past six months, Rumo-STIM has been practically evaluated on more than 40 farms through 12 veterinary practices.

This work has focused particularly on cattle requiring targeted nutritional support during periods of reduced rumination, reduced feed intake, dietary transition or other challenges affecting normal rumen function.

The involvement of veterinary practices has been central to this stage of development.

It has allowed us to evaluate how Rumo-STIM fits into real farm situations while maintaining the important distinction between providing nutritional support and investigating or treating an underlying health condition.

Rumo-STIM is not a replacement for veterinary diagnosis, treatment, nutritional investigation or good herd management. It is a complementary feed designed to support normal rumen function as part of that wider approach.

When Can Rumo-STIM Be Used?

Rumo-STIM is designed to provide targeted nutritional support during periods when rumen function may be under pressure, including:

• Fresh and transition cows
• Periods of reduced feed intake or poor rumination
• Changes in silage, pasture or ration composition
• Housing, grouping, transport or other management changes
• Beef cattle experiencing periods of nutritional or management stress
• Lush pasture periods when fibre balance and rumen function may be challenged

It should always be used as part of good nutritional, veterinary and herd-management practice.

The recommended dose for adult cattle is 250 ml orally each day for four consecutive days.

Rumo-STIM is available in 1L and 5L packs. One 1L pack provides a complete four-day course for one adult animal.

Lauching First In Ireland

We are proud to launch Rumo-STIM first in Ireland.

The product is available exclusively through veterinary practices and is supplied by Interchem Limited.

We will officially showcase Rumo-STIM in the Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships.

Our team will be available to discuss the development process, the science behind the formulation and our ongoing whole-herd supplementation research.

We will also have samples available and look forward to speaking with farmers, veterinary practitioners and the wider agricultural industry about the evolving role of rumen monitoring and targeted nutritional support.

An Important Milestone for Precision Microbes

Rumo-STIM represents an important milestone for Precision Microbes.

It is the outcome of three years of ongoing research, formulation development, practical learning and collaboration across commercial farms and veterinary practices.

Our wider whole-herd research continues, but Rumo-STIM allows us to bring one of the clearest early opportunities from that work directly to Irish farms.

It reflects what we believe product development should look like: listening to farmers and vets, learning under commercial farm conditions, following the evidence and developing practical biological solutions for the challenges facing modern livestock systems.
