Hydro-STIM is a next generation hypertonic oral rehydration solution (ORS) which has been formulated by veterinary surgeons and ruminant nutritionists. ORS remain the cornerstone of supportive care in cases of neonatal calf enteritis, the leading cause of mortality in calves less than one month of age*.
Taking this into consideration the team at Precision Microbes have developed a multi-functional ORS, Hydro-STIM, which has been designed to physiologically support calves during diarrhoea by: Promoting hydration and electrolyte status, Contributing to acid-base equilibrium, Assisting energy balance, Providing metabolic aids and Assisting gut recovery.
1 | Promotes Fluid Stabilisation
- A reconstituted dose of Hydro-STIM provides 2 litres to replace fluid lost due to enteritis.
- Solutes are designed to enhance gut absorption of fluids and electrolytes with an optimal glycogenic-to-sodium ratio of 1.9*.
- Short-chain fatty acids further support absorption and helps repair damaged mucosa.

- High SID value ORS is important for calves because it helps effectively correct acid-base imbalances caused by diarrhea and dehydration.
- A higher SID promotes the removal of excess acids from the body, restoring normal blood pH and supporting better metabolic function, thus improving the calf’s overall recovery, energy levels, and health.
- A high SID value supports alleviation from the state of metabolic acidosis induced by neonatal calf enteritis, one of the main causes of weak, inappetant calves

Feeding Programme for Recovery & Long-Term Gut Health
- Continuous feeding of milk/milk replacer is essential for recovery
- Calves experiencing severe dehydration may need additional ORS therapy or intravenous fluid therapy based on clinical assessment
- To optimise gut health, immunity support and performance, continue feeding PM long-term 30ml/day/calf
4 | Provides High Levels Of Safe, Metabolisable Buffers
- The alkalinising buffers acetate, propionate, and citrate provide long-term relief from metabolic acidosis whilst avoiding local abomasal alkalinization, which can promote harmful bacteria and interfere with milk clotting.
- Once metabolised in the liver, they convert to bicarbonate, exerting systemic alkalinising effects and supporting ongoing acid-base balance.

Precision Microbes includes the probiotic Enterococcus lactis NCIMB 10415 at 1.5 x 10^8 CFU/ml, given at 30ml daily for the first 30 days—the highest risk period for neonatal calf enteritis.
